Who is Jean Alter?
[This is my “Lizzy Grant” to Lana Del Ray. My “On a Friday” to Radiohead. A natural evolution of my artistic expression.] – @png.javi via Instagram
Jean Alter is an alter ego created by Javier Bennett. This rebrand has been a long time coming—ever since 2021 when debut single “sleep” was released. “Javier Bennett” never felt like the right name for the deeply emotional sonic world I was building. Songwriting has always felt like a way of accessing an elevated self, so I suppose that’s who Jean is to me—my higher self.
A debut EP was released in the latter half of 2021, but it wasn’t until November of that year when things started to shift. A cover of “God Must Hate Me” by American Idol’s Catie Turner was recorded and shared by Javier, and was seen by Catie herself shortly after. A collaboration began, and the song was released under Atlantic Records on January 18, 2022.
That year was big on finding a unique artistic style. After a successful sophomore EP release, “Human Being” was released in November 2022. It was a clear indicator of the potential Javier had for making pop hits, as it still remains Javier's most streamed song, and was featured on Spotify's Anti-Pop Editorial Playlist.
Three years later, Javier’s back with music, the strongest it’s ever been, a debut website, and a debut music video.
